EX-02 family reunification form: boxes, signature and filing
With the EX-02, someone living legally in Spain applies for residence for their spouse or partner, their children, the people they legally represent or their parents (ascendientes). You need one per family member; for the initial application the sponsor (reagrupante) signs it and files it at the Oficina de Extranjería (immigration office) of their province or through Mercurio. It is also used for renewals and for independent residence.

Which relatives it covers: the 11 relationship boxes
Section 4 starts with the relationship to the sponsor: you tick one box, and all but the last refer to a letter of art. 66.1 of RD 1155/2024.

| «Cónyuge» (spouse) | a | Over 18 and not separated; only one spouse. |
| «Pareja registrada» (registered partner) | b.1.º | Registered in a public register of an EU country. |
| «Pareja no registrada» (unregistered partner) | b.2.º | Twelve months of living together, unless you have children together. |

| «Menor de 18 años representada legalmente por el reagrupante» (minor legally represented by the sponsor) | d | Representation not contrary to Spanish law. |
| «Mayor de 18 años discapacitada representada legalmente por el reagrupante» (adult with a disability legally represented by the sponsor) | d | The same, with a disability that requires support. |

| «Hijo/a mayor 18 años (sólo en caso de renovación)» (adult child, renewals only) | — | Only when renewing. |
Your own minor child goes under «Hijo/a menor 18 años»; the «representada legalmente» box is for a minor whose representation comes from another legal title, such as guardianship (tutela) (art. 66.1.d).
Type of application: who signs each one
| Box | Article | Signed by | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| «Reagrupación familiar inicial» (initial family reunification) | 65 to 68 | The sponsor | Afterwards, the family member applies for the visa. |
| «Inicial como familiar de residente de larga duración-UE en otro Estado miembro» (initial, as a relative of an EU long-term resident in another member state) | 68.2 | The family member | The family already existed in that state. |
| «Renovación» (renewal) | 71 | The reunited family member | Two months before expiry or up to three months after. |
| «Hijos e hijas de víctimas de redes organizadas o de trata» (children of victims of organised networks or trafficking) | 147 and 155 | The victim, who is the sponsor | No need to prove financial means, prior residence or housing. |
| «Residencia independiente de la persona reagrupante» (independent residence) | 69 | The reunited family member | Seven situations, from 69.1 to 69.6. |
Signatories: information sheets 8 to 11 and arts. 147 and 155; for a minor, their legal representative (representante legal) signs. If the sponsor already holds long-term residence, the family member's renewal goes on the EX-11 (Sheet 10).
The last box is «Autorización de trabajo para persona ascendiente reagrupada» (work authorisation for a reunited parent): reunification only allows the spouse, the partner and the children to work with no further procedure (art. 65.2).

Filing, time limit, visa and TIE
The sponsor files it in person (RD 1155/2024, art. 68.2): at the Oficina de Extranjería of their province or through Mercurio, the online filing platform, which accepts the initial EX-02 and its renewals (step by step). Sending it online, or through an accredited representative, counts as appearing in person (art. 197).
- Time limit: two months for the initial application, where silence means refusal (silencio administrativo negativo, art. 68.6); three for a renewal, where silence means approval (art. 71.5). If they don't answer.
- Visa: the family member applies at the consulate within two months of the approval being notified to the sponsor; the authorisation only takes effect once they enter Spain (arts. 40.1.a and 68.5.a).
- TIE (foreigner identity card): once in Spain, they apply for it within one month of entry (art. 37.3), with the EX-17 and paying the tasa 790-012.
- Requirements and documents (housing, financial means, health insurance, proof of the relationship): on the family reunification procedure page.
The 790-052 for each family member
Each EX-02 carries its own tasa 790-052, in the family member's name (Orden PJC/617/2025, art. 3.1): €10.94 for the initial application; €16.40 for a renewal and for the independent residence of a spouse or children; €21.87 for the relative of an EU long-term resident from another state. It is paid within ten working days of filing on paper, or at the moment of sending through Mercurio (art. 2).
For law firms: the EX-02 in Aproba
- One EX-02 per family member, from the family case file. The sponsor block is filled with the main holder's details and section 1 with each member's, taken from their client record; each PDF is named after that family member.
- Your firm goes in section 2 when you switch on the option that you are filing. «Autorización de la que es titular», «Representante legal, en su caso» and the domicilio a efectos de notificaciones (address for notifications), with its DEHú box, are left blank: they depend on the case.
- Page 2, editable in any PDF viewer: the relationship box comes ticked when the family member's relationship and age leave no doubt (spouse, minor son or daughter, parent); the other boxes, the type of application, simultaneous applications, the place and the date each have their own field.
- The [tasa 790-052](/en/fees/tasa-790-052), one per family member: it is generated on the official website with each member's details; you choose the line (2.1.2 for an initial application) and type the captcha.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a separate EX-02 for each child?
Yes. Section 1 has room for only one person, and each family member gets their own authorisation and pays their own fee. With a spouse and two children, that makes three forms, each with the same sponsor block and «SÍ» in the simultaneous-applications box.
Can the family member file it from their own country?
Generally not: the sponsor files it in Spain (art. 68.2). The exception is relatives of an EU long-term resident in another member state: they file it themselves and, if they are outside Spain, at the Spanish consulate in the EU country where they were living (Sheet 9).
My child turns 18 during the process: which box do I tick?
What counts is their age on the day the authorisation is applied for on their behalf (art. 66.1.c): if they are 17 when the EX-02 is handed in, «Hijo/a menor 18 años». When renewing, once they are an adult, «Hijo/a mayor 18 años (sólo en caso de renovación)».
How much does the EX-02 cost?
The form itself is free. You pay the tasa 790-052 for each family member: €10.94 for the initial application (item 2.1.2) and €16.40 for a renewal (2.2.2). The family member's visa also has its own fee (art. 38.h).
